THE SCONE Relay for Life walk is set to be bigger and better than ever when it starts on October 18.
Run every two years, the event is a fundraiser for the NSW Cancer Council and this year the Scone Committee hopes to raise $30,000.
Committee member Lee Watts said the Relay involves teams of 10 to 15 people who either run or walk laps of Scone Park.
Only one person needs to do a lap at a time and it is not a race. Relay for Life starts at 2pm on Saturday, October 18, and teams will do laps until 10am on Sunday, October 19.
Ms Watts said people can register on the day, but to raise the ideal amount people need to register now and start finding sponsors.
The committee and participants usually raise about $25,000 but this year they hope to raise $30,000.
Fundraising packs are sent out after a team or individual has registered and the type of fundraising is up to the individual.
Ms Watts said people can be as creative as they like and suggested fundraising ideas such as holding craft stalls and mowing lawns. The Committee has already started their fundraising contribution; they are holding a raffle at the Scone Neighbourhood Centre where tickets can be bought.
So far a few people have registered, but Mrs Watts said plenty more have been coming into the centre and picking up brochures and information packs.
Registration costs $11 and includes insurance and a t-shirt.
People can register either by visiting the Neighbourhood Centre or going online to www.relayforlife.com.au. The sponsorship kits are sent out after registration.
Because it is a charity event, fundraising will also continue on the day. Ms Watts said each team is welcome to set up food, craft or face painting stalls or even ask for donations to set up a kiddie corner with the funds being donated back to the Cancer Council.
“They will not just be sitting on their own; it will be like a carnival,” she said.
To make this year bigger and better there will be various animal mascots such as Prime Possum and Miss Relay will be held for the first time. A twist on Miss Showgirl competitions, Miss Relay will see men don frocks and heels in a fundraising competition.
“It is not just about walking on the day,” she said.
The event will start at 2pm with cancer survivors walking the first lap it is only once they complete their lap that everyone else will start.
If you do not have a team Ms Watts is forming one at the Neighbourhood Centre.
The next and last information session about the event will be held on October 13 or inquiries may also be made to Lee or Jaala at the Neighbourhood Centre on 6545 2562.
